Surgical/Dental Loupes Guide.

While your investment is safe at The Loupe Store, you can save yourself a lot of time (and money) just reading the next chapter giving you a better understanding of what to look out for when choosing your Sugical Binoculars.

Do not be misled by the X rate (magnification power). What really matters is the

Resolution
This is the most important factor when choosing your surgical-loupes. If you have any experience buying a digital camera you will be aware of what the resolution actually represents. The resolution reflects the ability of seeing the smallest points of the object you are observing. What determines the resolution in a lens is the quality of the material. You will want to have near perfect resolution across the complete

Field of View
The field of view is actually the width of the picture you see when looking through your surgical loupes. The higher your magnification the smaller the field of view becomes. So, unless your specialisation requires a higher magnification or you have had enough experience with surgical loupes and therefore do not mind the smaller field of view you could be better off with a standard magnification of 2.5x. While carrying out an operation your head will move forwards and backwards which can affect the focus of your loupes. That is also why choosing your surgical loupes you need to take into consideration the

Depth of Field
The smaller a depth of field the more you need to hold your neck in position to remain in focus. Take this into account when choosing your surgical loupes. It is important you need to know how much range you have within your Working Distance Your working distance is the distance between your eyes and the object you are working on. It is well worth measuring this in your natural working position (standing, sitting and both). It is easy to measure. Take your natural working position and have someone measure the distance from your eyes to the object. Do this a few times to have an average and take the depth of field into consideration when making your choice. Maybe get someone to assist you to be sure of your measurements. Your height naturally affects your working distance, a taller person have a longer working distance than a shorter person. In general a normal sized person in dentistry would use a working distance between 380 mm and 420 mm, but before accepting this as your working distance we do recommend you to work this out yourself. Remember, it also depends on your work position (standing, sitting).

Magnification
While the magnification seems to be the most important choice to make when buying your surgical loupes, it is not. It actually can be quite misleading. In the industry we have no defined measurement on the magnification power and for example a 3x magnification can vary from manufacturer to another. An experienced user would probably use a magnification of 3.5x upwards depending also on his/her preference. Starting out you would want a 2.5x or 3.0x magnification. The magnification affects the field of view, if it is high your field of view will get smaller. Weight When you want to know the weight of the dental loupes you are buying, make sure the specialist dealer provides you with the weight including the frame.
